Times Online have posted an interview with Rockstar Games Vice President Dan Houser. Almost immediately the banning of Manhunt 2 is brought up, marking one of the few times where one of the Houser’s actually addresses the issue.

Dan Houser wrote:
Manhunt 2 was not a good situation. When a game gets banned, it means we’re not doing our first job, of making the investors back their money.

A pretty grim, if not factual, comment to make, but there is more:

Dan Houser wrote:
Look, video games are a popular and easy enemy. It’s all part and parcel of doing something that’s not been done before. One of the things that’s always been exciting is the feeling of being in at the birth of a new medium, but of course the history of technology-driven art from the printing press onwards has been of people fighting against that stuff.

It feels at last like we’re moving on from that debate. The audience is getting past 30 so it all becomes a bit silly. That’s not to say that all games are for all people; we’ve never said that. GTA has always been rated 18 and we’ve always been very happy with that.

Nevertheless, we do get frustrated when video games are singled out and movies are given a free pass. Manhunt 2 was banned in the same week that Saw was released. The arguments become quite ludicrous quite quickly when people argue that games are somehow more dangerous than full-motion video.

Within Rockstar, sometimes we feel that some of our games get singled out and held up as pariahs. All we want to do is tell a story with rounded characters. Like GoodFellas, which is a key film for us, our rounded characters happen to be criminals.

I’m not sure there is anything to take away from these comments beyond Rockstar was also bummed out about what happened to Manhunt 2.

doing our first job, of making the investors back their money.

so that is why this community gets shit on all the time, they would rather cater to the investors than the fans of the game, well done houser for being honest sad fact is the investors didn't even know Manhunt 2 was released on PC.

Interesting article. It's annoying manhunt gets singled out and a movie with the same level of violence (Sometimes worse) is perfectly fine. What the hell is this double standard crap! How am I supposed to support manhunt when I can't pre-order it.

they didn't help the situation by sitting quiet and then not promoting the game

this is the first time i have read him comment on manhunt at all. it is also the first time i have read him talking like a buisness man. it seems to me he is saying that manhunt is over until things change

I just wish we could get a straight answer on whether or not they are going to continue the Manhunt franchise.

Unfortunately they'll never confirm if they are going to continue with the series or not. They havn't yet, there not going to, yet Manhunt2 still came out without a peep that they intended to continue or that they gave a crap at all.

It gets decent sales, so it's possible. Whats more concerning is that a current gen sequal on the 360 or PS3 would be twice as brutal and offensive as the last gen ones and more expensive to make which is quite risky. It would also be hard to make properly without compromising the vision of manhunt. So it looks unlikely.

Still not so long ago we only had one amount of manhunt goodness, now we have double the amount of manhunting to mess around with. Just enjoy the ones we have, that for all intensive purposses shouldn't really even exist anyway, considering how brutal and cult they are.

So lets make so much noise that they can't resist making us another one, after all thats how we got M2.

i agree Halfpastdead... we should stick to both manhunts for now.... maybe in the future, they will again focus on the manhunt games cause right now, they have no interest in them....

well if you think about it Rockstar will tweak the game next time because now they know what will be allowed so they wont have as much trouble, they said if fans want it they will be made.

Lol, thats funny because they made Manhunt 2 even worse than 1 yet they must have known what would happen.

Also wanted to thank Lazlow and Pogo for this site, I'm sure it had an effect as well as decent sales to them making Manhunt2.

So, um, thanks. :D

Hmm, actually it was split between studios and versions, basically every rockstar studio worked on it a bit I think. It's got like every rockstar studio in the credits.

I don't think they would just shut down a studio because of one game, there all part of the whole of rockstar, I don't think each studio is expected to keep open by making enough money by themselves. Only if they thought they didn't need that particular studio in that place or if it wasn't being effective would they close it I would think.

The only way I see MH3 getting the green light, is if they did exactly as they did with MH2, filter and all. Hopefully all this bullshit taught them to make a PC version at the same time as the console versions, and release the uncut content through D2D or Steam for the PC version, as PSN and Live wouldn't allow the sale and distribution of such add-ons. They should do this with all works that they censor. I hate having to jump through hoops all the time via imports and cracks just to get a game in its entirety (or at all) because my nanny nation can't handle any sexyness (GTA4.) Ooh, seeing some bitch stroking Niko's wang is a no-no, but being able to stab her to death to get your fuck money back is all fine and dandy. Bah!
