GTA News | San Andreas 10 Year Anniversary Celebration

Rockstar have spent much of October celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the PlayStation 2.

The centrepiece of the celebration being the release of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas HD for the Xbox 360. This new version of San Andreas runs at a native 1280x720 resolution and includes achievements and various graphical improvements over the original console release. Several tracks have been removed from the in-game radio, presumably due to some licensing issue.

Rockstar recently ran a San Andreas beta, suggestion a PC update may be forthcoming. There is no word at present on a PlayStation update.

In addition to running San Andreas related competitions there was a San Andreas anniversary weekend event for Grand Theft Auto Online as well as an anniversary special update of San Andreas inspired player-made jobs.

While on the subject of Grand Theft Auto Online, on the weekend of October 3rd through 5th Rockstar held a Last Team Standing event where you could unlock an in-game hockey mask inspired by the “Please Stop Me” mask worn by the Smilies in Manhunt, by playing through the event play list.

Unfortunately I didn’t find out about it until after the event was by with and was unable to participate or share information regarding the event. Images of the mask can be seen on the Rockstar Newswire and in the Grand Theft Auto V thread on the forums. Congratulations to those that were able to take part! Hopefully Rockstar will run another event to unlock the mask in the future.

Rockstar News | Current Rockstar Developments
At the recent Cowen and Company Analyst conference Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick, said that he believes the Red Dead brand to be "permanent" in the same sense as Grand Theft Auto, while at the same time also reiterating that Take-Two is more interested in sustainable franchises rather than causing brand exhaustion through frequent releases. With sales exceeding 13 million units it comes as little surprise that a follow up to Red Dead Redemption may be in the works.

This follows the news from the most recent Take-Two investors conference call where they said they anticipate a major Rockstar release this fiscal year, meaning between now and March 2015. They also said that Rockstar will continue to support Grand Theft Auto Online with new content, including online heists. Last year Rockstar also teased forthcoming story content for Grand Theft Auto V.

The only officially acknowledged yet unreleased Rockstar title in development is Agent. Little is known about the game beyond the logo and it originally being announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Unofficially we have known of there being a 3d beat em up in the vein of The Warriors in development at one point or another for quite some time now. It is entirely possible that this game has been shelved for the time being due to the change in hardware.

Back in 2009 the composer of Bully, Shawn Lee, suggested that he may be returning to work on Bully 2. There has been no acknowledgment of the title from Rockstar beyond suggesting that a sequel was a possibility back in 2012.

There has also been much speculation about a PC release of Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto V, with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release also a possibility.

If internet rumours are to be believed then Rockstar may be preparing a trailer to show off during E3. I would temper expectations on this one as Rockstar tend to do reveals in their own time and have historically not been big on E3 announcements.

All of this said where does this leave Manhunt? The 10th anniversary of Manhunt passed with not so much as a whisper from Rockstar.

Rockstar News | Zynga Acquires NaturalMotion
Zynga has announced that it has purchased NaturalMotion for $527 million. NaturalMotion being the creators of the Euphoria and Morpheme animation technology as used by Rockstar in Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and most recently Grand Theft Auto V.

Previously Rockstar had licensed RenderWare technology for use on games developed on the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox, including Manhunt. After Criterion Games was bought by EA they decided to create their own proprietary technology, resulting in the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine as used on their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles and a secondary engine developed at Rockstar Leeds for use on their handheld titles and Manhunt 2. It is thought that part of the reasoning behind this was to avoid lining the pocket of a competing games publisher.

It may be some time before we hear from Rockstar regarding any possible future use of the technology within their games as at present the only announced title that Rockstar have in development is Agent. For their part NaturalMotion have said that they plan to continue licensing the technology.
